Inside an Ottoman Bed Base: Steel Profile, Reinforcing Beam and Powder Coat
Frame size and price are easy to compare across suppliers. What the frame is actually built from is usually left out — here's ours in full.

A welded steel frame is a specification with several parts, not one line item. Here’s what’s behind that description on every size we build.
The frame: 40 × 30 × 1.5 mm steel box tube
Every frame is built from 40 × 30 mm steel box tube with a 1.5 mm wall thickness. This is the same profile across all six sizes — the dimensions of the frame change with the size, but the tube it’s built from doesn’t. It’s welded, not bolted or riveted, which is what gives the finished frame its rigidity before any reinforcement is added.
One-piece versus two-piece frames, and where the reinforcing beam goes
Single is the only size built as a one-piece frame with a single, continuous slat bed. Every other size — Small Double through to Emperor — is a two-piece frame, split down the centre, and every two-piece frame carries a centre-mounted reinforcing beam in 40 × 50 mm box tube, also at 1.5 mm wall thickness. The beam sits at the join between the two halves, which is the point that needs it most on a frame of this width.
Black structured powder coat instead of wet paint
Every frame is finished in black structured powder coat rather than wet paint. Powder coating is baked on as a dry finish, which gives a harder, more even surface than liquid paint — the “structured” texture is a deliberate finish choice, not a defect, and it’s more resistant to scratches and impact marks in transit and in day-to-day use than a smooth painted surface would be.
Side lift as standard, end lift on request
The standard lift direction across the range is side lift — the frame opens along its long edge. End lift is available on request for rooms where a side approach to the bed isn’t practical. This is worth specifying in your enquiry if it applies to a particular order, since it doesn’t change the frame’s dimensions, only where the mechanism is mounted.
What arrives assembled and what you fit
The welded steel frame and lifting mechanism, including the gas springs, arrive assembled. Slats, fixings and fitting instructions are boxed separately inside the same pallet, ready to fit rather than pre-installed. The full specification for each size — dimensions, gas spring rating, slat count — is in the table below and on each size’s own product page, or as a single downloadable sheet on our specification PDF.
